Effective management of IT assets and services is critical to the success of any organization. The Configuration Management Database (CMDB) plays a pivotal role in this process by acting as a central repository that organizes and tracks key IT components—from hardware like servers and network devices to software applications and business services. With a comprehensive view of these assets, organizations can streamline operations, improve decision-making, and maintain greater control over their IT infrastructure.
Understanding the CMDB Schema Model
At the core of the CMDB is its schema, made up of various tables that categorize Configuration Items (CIs) and define relationships between them. The three key tables include:
- Base Configuration Item [cmdb]: This is the foundational table for non-IT assets, organizing physical and logical entities beyond traditional IT boundaries.
- Core Configuration Item [cmdb_ci]: This table contains the primary details of each CI—such as name, type, status, and more—forming the backbone of asset management in ServiceNow.
- CI Relationship [cmdb_rel_ci]: This table tracks the dependencies and relationships between CIs, helping you visualize how assets are interconnected within your IT ecosystem
Data Population in the CMDB
The CI Class Manager serves as a centralized location for managing CMDB classes. Accessible via Configuration > CI Class Manager, this tool allows you to:
- View Basic Info: Get details about selected classes, including display names, descriptions, and icons.
- Manage Attributes: Change and add new table properties, ensuring your CMDB stays relevant.
- Implement Identification and Reconciliation Rules: These rules help uniquely identify CIs and manage data updates from various discovery sources, maintaining data integrity across the board.
Key Features of CI Class Manager:
- Identification Rules: Ensure CIs are accurately identified, determining whether they are new or existing.
- Reconciliation Rules: Specify which sources can update attributes, maintaining control over data quality.
- Data Precedence Rules: Establish priorities for data updates, preventing lower-priority sources from overriding critical information.
- Data Refresh Rules: Keep your CIs up-to-date by identifying and refreshing stale.
Maintaining CMDB Health
To harness the full potential of your CMDB, regular monitoring and maintenance are essential. Health scorecards at the CI, class, and overall CMDB level provide valuable insights through key performance indicators (KPIs) such as:
- Completeness: Ensuring required fields are populated for all CIs.
- Correctness: Verifying data integrity against predefined rules to detect duplicates and stale CIs.
- Compliance: Auditing data for adherence to established guidelines and standards.
- Health Inclusion Rules: Filtering CIs included in health calculations, allowing for customized reporting based on specific domains.
Leveraging the CI Query Builder
The CMDB Query Builder simplifies the process of creating complex queries that span multiple classes and relationships. This powerful tool allows you to efficiently analyze your infrastructure and services, enhancing your decision-making capabilities.
