Metadata provides perspective about data, describing the information inside a data set, like a candy wrapper detailing the ingredients of the sweet stuff it encloses. This kind of data drives a search engine like Google to list results more precisely – or drives a person with a title and author, to find a book in the library or bookstore.
More and more organizations are realizing that in order to drive business value from data distributed in an organization, robust metadata management is needed to gain the necessary context and lineage around key data assets. At the same time, industry regulations are driving the need for better transparency.
